“When you reach the top of the hill, you will see Bodrum.
Don’t suppose that you will leave feeling the same as you came.
The ones before you, they were like that too.
They departed, but their hearts remained forever in Bodrum”.
The Bodrum Amphitheatre (Bodrum Antique Theatre) is also one of the best sights in Bodrum. It dates back to 4th century B.C. and the best preserved sites of ancient Halicarnassus.
The landscape is amazing especially at sunsets. The 13.000 person capacity amphitheatre is located on the Bodrum-Turgutreis road.
After the digs in 1973, the region is set as an open air museum.
Above the amphitheatre on the hills, there are also rock tombs belonging to the Hellenistic and Roman era. A visit to the Bodrum Amphitheatre is one of the best things to do in Bodrum for the visitors on their Bodrum & Gumbet holidays.
A visit to Bodrum Castle of St. Peter is definitely must-see in Bodrum, and many visitors are surprised to find such riveting blend of modern and ancient behind those imposing stone walls.
Whether viewed from the sea or the land, Bodrum’s famous castle is an impressive example of medieval architecture.
Construction of the castle took years to complete and occupying some 30.000 square feet at its base. In its days, the castle was a monumental symbol of the unity of Christian Europe against the ascending power of the Ottoman Empire.
The castle is in excellent condition, it now houses a one of the world's finest museums (with exhibits on underwater archaeology). Mostly stones used in the construction come from the tomb of king Mausoleum of Halicarnassus.
The Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology was established in The Bodrum Castle in 1964. Initially, restoration of the castle was the priority; later, exhibition halls were created in the available space. Today, there are 14 exhibition halls in The Museum of Bodrum. As is clear from the name of museum, it includes mostly underwater artifacts.
The Glass Hall, with is ongoing exhibition of glass and glassware, was opened in 1986, with the assistance of Paşabahçe Glass and Bottle Factory. General information about the museum’s glass collection is provided here. The specimens are exhibited in darkness, with illumination from below. This method of exhibition permits beter viewing of all the various markings and colors of the glass.
The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus was constructed c. 350 BC as a tomb for Mausolus, the ruler of Caria (an area of modern Turkey). Said to have been designed and constructed by the greatest sculptors and craftsmen of the time, the temple was known for its detailed sculptural reliefs and impressive scale, towering nearly 150 feet high (47 m). Destroyed by a series of earthquakes that struck the region during the 1st millennium AD, portions of the tomb were excavated by British archaeologists in the mid 19th century. One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the term "Mausoleum" as it is used today traces its origins to this tomb.
Ephesus which was established as a port, was used to be the most important commercial centre. It played a great role in the ancient times with its strategic location. Ephesus is located on a very fertile valley. Ephesus, once, the trade centre of the ancient world, a religious centre of the early Christianity and today, Ephesus is an important tourism centre in Turkey. The ancient city Ephesus is located in Selcuk, a small town 30km away from Kusadasi and 180 km away from Bodrum. House of Virgin Mary is located on the top of the "Bulbul" mountain 9 km ahead of Ephesus, the shrine of Virgin Mary enjoys a marvelous atmosphere hidden in the green.
It is the place where Mary may have spent her last days. Indeed, she may have come in the area together with Saint John, who spent several years in the area to spread Christianity. Mary preferred this remote place rather than living in crowded place.
